Conference paperPublication Metadata only Global technology leadership: a case for innovative education praxis(Elsevier, 2013-04-03) Bowen, E. E.; Bertoline, G. R.; Athinarayanan, R.; Cox. R. F.; Burbank, K. A.; Buskirk, D. R.; Küçükönal, Hatice; Aviation Management; KÜÇÜKÖNAL, HaticeThe development of a scholarly model of technology leadership necessitates a global component for the modern technology and technology education organization. The authors conduct qualitative research of four key concepts around globalization and innovation in technology higher education, as well as issues in organizational change implementation and the evolution of ‘global technology leadership’ as a new scholarly discipline. Via a process of on-site visits for observation and face-to-face interviews with both academic and industry organizations in multiple countries, participant scholars utilized ethnographic research methods (Lindlof & Taylor, 2002) to gather detailed qualitative data on the development and status of implementing technology innovation and global technology leadership strategies. Results of content analysis conducted manually and via NVivo qualitative data analysis software revealed bifurcation in programmatic approaches and conceptualizations on these topics between established and relatively younger higher educational programs, as well as critical considerations in industry-academic partnerships and the role of leadership and management scientific training in higher education. ArticlePublication Open Access Kültürel değer algıların izlenim yönetimi taktiklerine etkisi: alt ve orta kademe yöneticiler üzerine bir araştırma(Uludağ Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi Çalışma Ekonomisi ve Endüstri İlişkileri Bölümü, 2014) Şeşen, H.; Soran, Semih; Balkan, M. The Notifying Body, which shall accept the design, is narrowing the envelope further by applying conservative approaches to protect the end users. There are several international parties involved in different stages of the development process. Motivated by these circumstances, an innovative development environment for high-tech industrial products has been proposed, incorporating the active participation of both the Notifying Body and the Customer, which validation is accomplished by a case study in the development of an alternative cryogenic LNG fueling system.ArticlePublication Open Access Traveler's idle time and the value chain at airports(Milli Savunma Üniversitesi Hezârfen Havacılık ve Uzay Teknolojileri Enstitüsü, 2015-07-23) Üçler, Çağlar; Martin-Domingo, Luis; Professional Flight Program; Aviation Management; ÜÇLER, Çağlar; DOMINGO, Luıs MartınThere is a high growth in the air traffic supported by the global trade and tourism and due to airport congestion travelers are spending more time at airports, which are competing to attract airlines with lower aeronautical costs reducing their profitability. The growing transit time spent at airports together with the waiting time in front of check-in, passport, security control or baggage claim is an idle time of the air traveler, which is not generating any value. The perception of waiting is also mostly negative, that the associated airports are disliked, leading to loss of revenue in commercial offerings. Another problem is that due to the high variety in the customer profile, the shops at the airports need to carry a high inventory over a wide spectrum of items required, which is not creating any value as well. Thus in order to deliver a sustainable value chain at the airport, an innovative customer focused integrated approach is proposed herewith, based on a smart phone platform called Gate Ø, facilitating the idle times of the air traveler. This strategic approach is evaluated successfully within a value chain analysis showing up its potential across the value chain stakeholders.ArticlePublication Open Access İnsan kaynakları yöneti̇m süreçleri̇ni̇n performansa etki̇si̇: örgütsel öğrenmeni̇n aracılı rolü ve bi̇r uygulama(Doğuş Üniversitesi, 2016) Soran, Semih; Serin, E.; Balkan, M. C.; Aviation Management; DOMINGO, Luıs MartınThis paper studies the adoption of mobile Internet by airports. Using a new theoretical model, the study tests whether early adopters of mobile Internet for airports can be considered real innovators. Seventy-five international airports from four different geographical areas and of three different sizes are analyzed. The paper complements the analysis with an additional innovation adoption, the PC-Website, and two dimensions are analyzed: the time of adoption and the degree of maturation. Our findings show that there are four real innovator airports: London Heathrow, London Stansted, Amsterdam Schiphol and Copenhagen. Airport innovation is found to be related to geographical location and commercial revenue rather than to airport size. The four real innovator airports iPhone apps are used as case studies to identity best practices for the delivery of airport mobile services.Conference paperPublication Open Access The causality analysis of air transport and socio-economics factors: the case of OECD countries(Elsevier, 2017) Küçükönal, Hatice; Sedefoğlu, Gülşah; Professional Flight Program; Aviation Management; Kazda, A.; Smojver, I.; KÜÇÜKÖNAL, Hatice; SEDEFOĞLU, GülşahAir transport is one of the most important industries in the world with its rapid growth, and direct and indirect contribution to world economy. In other words, GDP, tourism and employment are the key factors causing that growth in air transport and an increase in those factors boost the demand for air transport. However, uncertainty in economy, rising unemployment and increased terrorist attacks towards tourism would be a big threat to the growth of air transport in the future. To understand the importance of the mentioned factors, we first aim to apply an econometric approach which is panel Granger causality analysis. To achieve that, data from World Bank data set for OECD countries between the year of 2000 and 2013 is used in this study. We apply Pesaran CDLM test and Friedman’s test which are preferred when the number of units (N) is higher than the time (T) to test cross-sectional dependence and we then perform Granger causality analysis in order to see whether there is a causal relationship (unidirectional or bidirectional) or not among air transport, tourism, economic growth and employment. Econometric results indicate that there is a unidirectional short run causal relationship between economic growth, tourism, employment and air transport and that those factors play an important role in the growth of air transport. In this paper, we also aim to discuss the future challenges for air transport within the frame of econometric results and statistical analysis.ArticlePublication Open Access What does Bayesian probit regression tell us about Turkish female- and male-headed households poverty?(Centre of Sociological Research (CSR), 2017-04) Çağlayan-Akay, E.; Sedefoğlu, Gülşah; Professional Flight Program; SEDEFOĞLU, GülşahThe objectives of the study are to examine the determinants of the poverty status and to illustrate the probabilities of household poverty in Turkey using Household Budget Survey which was prepared by Turkish Statistical Institute, 2013. The data is reorganized as rural and urban area considering female- and male-headed households so that to analyze the determinants of household poverty. Bayesian probit regression is applied using a Markov Chain algorithm, Gibbs sampler. Results of the study show that the most effective variables, which cause a decrease of the probability of living under poverty line, are education level of bachelor for 4 years, master and PhD for female-headed households and household type of being single adult for male-headed households in urban area, working full time for male- and female-headed households in rural area. However, other most remarkable variables, which cause an increased risk of poverty, are being elderly, disabled or inoperable for male-headed households, being illiterate for female-headed households in urban area and for rural area, being elderly, disabled or inoperable for male- and marital status of being single for female-headed households.Conference paperPublication Unknown Risk analysis of ports in maritime industry in Turkey using fmea based intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS approach(EDP Sciences, 2018) Senel, M.; Senel, B.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal AlpayToday, international trade is extremely important for countries' economies. It is possible to show the ship's transport as one of the most important execution channels of this trade. International commercial maritime transport subject to many rules and regulations carries many risks in processes such as loading, handling and unloading. Commercial ports are the places where these risks are seen intensely. From this point, many risk components in terms of the process in the port, one of the international commercial port in Turkey, based on a risk analysis is tried to be evaluated in this study. Especially, loading and unloading processes are focused with the directions of industrial experts. The main dimensions of the risks in the port are determined via expert opinions, and the sub-criteria of these dimensions are revealed. In this way, a generic model is proposed based on failure mode and effect analysis and the model is digitized using intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS. Interpretations are made in the direction of the obtained analysis results.ArticlePublication Open Access Portfolio management for innovation ideas: weigthing antecedents with AHP(Beta Publishing, 2018) Üçler, Çağlar; Professional Flight Program; ÜÇLER, ÇağlarPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there are antecedents of innovation, which can be looked at during idea evaluations at the fuzzy front end. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted for the antecedents of the innovation output, which were then verified and weighed by an integrated team of experts and academicians participating TIM’s InoSuit project by using AHP. Findings: The antecedents were isolated as value, applicability, contribution to innovation, generalization, strategy, risk, and suitability of existing solution, and their weights were determined as 12, 15, 10, 18, 8, 32, and 5 % respectfully. Practical Implications: This research provides an analytical assessment model for the initial idea selection for innovation, which can be used within innovation management systems. Originality: There is no comparable scale applicable to the selection in the very early phases of ideation.Conference paperPublication Metadata only Intelligent self-adaptive decision model for product innovation in FE(IEEE, 2018-07-02) Kurt, O. E.; Üçler, Çağlar; Vayvay, O.; Professional Flight Program; ÜÇLER, ÇağlarCompanies need New Product Development (NPD) more than ever to satisfy rapidly changing customer needs, to secure and increase their share in the global market. Continuous innovation stream is required to succeed there with best promising ideas to be selected at the fuzzy Front End (FFE). The fuzziness of FE is remedied here by creating an intelligent, self-adaptive and flexible decision model The proposed model is non-bureaucratic, manages fuzziness, and it is capable to provide insight for future trends Furthermore, it contributes to knowledge accumulation by maintaining all data of ideas, both accepted or rejected, enabling knowledge based design. The intelligent is provided by the growth of idea, their computation and assessment. I.e. the model itself weighs ideas independently and adaptively by respecting the size and population of the associated idea group. This is achieved by using K-means clustering algorithm by which meaningful changes in accumulated ideas are detected to calculate trend. The synthesized model supports managers and researchers to organize the FFE.Conference paperPublication Metadata only Extension of the virtual customer inspection for distant collaboration in NPD(IEEE, 2018-08-13) Gupta, R. K.; Üçler, Çağlar; Bernard, A.; Professional Flight Program; ÜÇLER, ÇağlarThe usage of holographic virtual customer inspections for gathering feedback during the production in the aviation industry was successfully demonstrated in Airbus, which implied the assessment of the requirements spanning the Kano dimensions and conjoint analysis of satisfaction and importance. A further extension is proposed here as a research in progress to enclose early phases in New Product Development throughout the manufacturing. Consequently, collaboration achievement is targeted here by the virtual inspection of digital mock-ups, semi-/ and finished products to enable the circulation of knowledge and exhibiting design iterations in set based models. Nevertheless, challenges are associated to the virtual inspection, which are derived from technological constraints or based on the nature of distant collaboration. An assessment of these challenges is made by means of a hierarchical aggregation to discuss conceptually the applicability of the extension, highlighting future research areas for this field as well.Conference paperPublication Metadata only Enablers for industry 4.0(IEEE, 2018-12-10) Havle, Celal Alpay; Üçler, Çağlar; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay; ÜÇLER, ÇağlarBoth, globalization and technological advancements do motivate manufacturing organizations to adopt Industry 4.0 practices. It implies an evolutional transformation, which aggregates advanced technologies and cyber-physical interactions. Some of required capabilities are already existing in companies, but some have to be developed/ adopted. The purpose of this paper is to isolate these enables required for Industry 4.0. Consequently, extensive literature review was carried out to synthesize the enablers for Industry 4.0, which are further grouped in an associated Mind Map. The main enablers were isolated as human, organization and technology in the higher level with associated subordinated enablers in an organized manner. The scientific implication is that this Mind Map can be used in analysis, when introducing weighs and importance factors. Practically, the mind map embodies a body of knowledge, i.e. the enablers, that have to be internalized by managers to achieve Industry 4.0 practices. Existing Industry 4.0 research is either focusing on partial topics in depth, or it gives a general overview of readiness for Industry 4.0, which is a wide collection of factors. To our best knowledge there is no similar work guiding throughout enablers visually, easing the adaptation process.Conference paperPublication Open Access Determinants of the entrepreneurial intentions: testing the Ajzen’s Model in Turkish sample(Future Academy, 2019) Soran, Semih; Şeşen, H.; Gökalp, Pınar Horasanlı; Professional Flight Program; Ozsahin, M.; Hidirlar, T.; SORAN, SemihMany theories have been put forward in explaining the intentions of individuals to become entrepreneurs. In one of these, Ajzen (1991) sees planned actions as the conclusion of conscious decisions to act determinedly. The intentions that guide these actions are a combination of experiences, individual traits, and own personal motivation. According to Ajzen, the individual tends to be entrepreneurial in the direction of personal expectations and social norms in the society and intends to achieve entrepreneurial behavior by providing personal motivation through perceived behavioral control. In this context, the most critical outcome is the finding that human behavior is a planned action driven by intentions. In this context, it is essential that the university students, who are at the very beginning of their working life, have entrepreneurial intentions. In this studying the light of data that were collected with a questionnaire from 459 university students and Ajzen'sPlanned Behavior Theory tested on student's entrepreneurial intentions. Data were analyzed with correlation and regression analysis. The results showed that attitude and perceived behavioral control are quite useful to explain entrepreneurial intentions of university students.ArticlePublication Open Access An exploration of new avenues regarding deep tissue penetration and higher singlet oxygen efficiencies: novel near-IR photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy(TÜBİTAK, 2019) Yeşilgül, N.; Kılıç, Bilal; Professional Flight Program; KILIÇ, BilalA series of novel BODIPY-bearing electron-withdrawing groups at the meso position are reported here. According to the optical measurements, it may be clearly seen that the introduction of electron-donating groups into 3,5-positions and the presence of electron-withdrawing groups at the meso position of the BODIPY core resulted in spectacular bathochromic shifts (up to similar to 304 nm), and the projected photosensitizers had absorption bands in the therapeutic window of the electromagnetic spectrum (600-900 nm). The absorption maxima of compounds 4, 5, 6, and 7 were at 886 nm, 890 nm, 760 nm, and 761 nm, respectively. The singlet oxygen generation experiments revealed that compounds 6 and 7, with high singlet oxygen quantum yields (0.52 and 0.93, respectively), were excellent and promising candidates for photodynamic therapy. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.93 was the highest reported value so far for BODIPY-based photosensitizers.Conference paperPublication Open Access The effect of job satisfaction and self-efficacy to the intrapreneurial behaviors(Future Academy, 2019) Soran, Semih; Şeşen, H.; Güven, B.; Professional Flight Program; SORAN, SemihOrganizations need to constantly make innovations due to the rapid changes in the political, economic, technological and social areas. In this sense, entrepreneurship is one of the concepts that have become more valuable in recent times. Since those which cannot manage to change might lose their competitive advantages and hence organizational effectiveness, the organizations should act as an entrepreneur, discover and employ the individuals having high entrepreneurial spirit and establish a new organizational environment to promote intrapreneurship. Today, the intrapreneurship is now essential for both private and public bodies and agencies. The citizenry who are habituated to the innovative services provided by private firms expect the same services and modern approaches from public institutions. Therefore, public service providers should also reveal the entrepreneurial qualifications of their personnel. In this context, intrapreneurial employees play critical roles in organizational change and development. 175 information technology managers from various businesses have participated in this research. Data were analysed with correlation and regression analysis. The results showed that job satisfaction and self-efficacy are quite effective to explain intrapreneurial behaviours of technology managers.
