The relationship of efficiency and sustainability in agrofood : soilless agriculture

Abstract

Due to the rising global population and potential food shortages, ecological, sustainable and efficient alternative production methods are becoming potential solutions. The soilless farming is advocated for increasing efficiency through the technological advancements and highlighting its sustainable features. This production method stands out due to characteristics such as water efficiency, energy savings, human control, and shortened harvest periods. This thesis aims to understand the concepts of sustainability and efficiency, which are cited as the reasons for the preference of soilless agriculture, and to analyze the relationship between these two concepts. In this context, the views of Haraway, particularly the concept of "cyborgization," will shape the framework of the study, and the feasibility of the future envisioned by Haraway through soilless farming will be examined. In line with this, a netnographic approach was employed to examine the internet pages of fourteen soilless farming producers worldwide, who were selected using a snowball sampling method. Field notes from the examinations were used for coding, and numerical data derived from these codes were analyzed. It was determined that the primary reason for the preference of soilless agriculture is profitability, and the relationship between sustainability and efficiency is mainly intertwined from an economic perspective. Notably, solutions predominantly target production systems while sidelining distribution and consumption processes, raising queries about resultant power dynamics. In conclusion, with the influence of technology, there has been a distance from Haraway's vision of a cyborg, equal, just, and classless world, and that the existing economic system has exacerbated inequalities.

Küresel nüfusun hızla arttığı ve gıda ihtiyacının karşılanamayacağı öngörüsü ile, ekolojik, sürdürülebilir ve verimli olduğu söylenen alternatif üretim yöntemleri çözüm olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu yöntemlerden biri üretiminde teknolojik gelişmelere yer vererek verimliliği arttırdığı savunulan ve sürdürülebilir özellikleri ön plana çıkarılan topraksız tarımdır. Aynı zamanda topraksız tarım su verimliliği, enerji tasarrufu, insan kontrollü olması ve hasat sürelerinin kısalmasını sağlaması gibi özellikleriyle de öne çıkmaktadır. Bu tezin odak noktası topraksız tarımın tercih edilme nedeni olarak gösterilen sürdürülebilirlik ve verimlilik kavramlarının anlaşılması ve bu iki kavram arasındaki ilişkinin çözümlenmesidir. Bu bağlamda Haraway'in görüşleri, özellikle de "cyborg"laşma kavramı çalışmanın çerçevesini oluşturacak ve oluşturulan tartışma alanında Haraway tarafından tasavvur edilen geleceğin topraksız tarım üzerinden mümkün olup olmadığı sorgulanacaktır. Bu doğrultuda netnografiden yararlanılarak kar topu yöntemiyle elde edilen Dünya genelinde on dört adet topraksız tarım yapan üretici ve üreticilere ekipman sağlayan şirketlerin internet siteleri incelenmiştir. Incelemeler sonucunda çıkarılan saha notlarından yararlanılarak kodlama yapılmış, daha sonrasında bu kodlamalardan elde edilen sayısal veriler analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, topraksız tarımın tercih edilme sebebinin öncelikle karlılık olduğu ve sürdürülebilirlik ile verimlilik arasındaki ilişkinin daha çok ekonomik bir perspektiften birbirine bağlandığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu noktada çözüm için geliştirilen yöntemler konuşulurken, problem olarak üretim sistemine odaklanıldığı ve dağıtım ve tüketim gibi diğer alanlardan özellikle uzaklaşılmak istendiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Aynı zamanda üretilen çözümle beraber değişen ya da derinleşen güç ilişkileri sorgulanmıştır. Tam da bu sebeplerle Haraway'in cyborg, eşit, adil ve sınıfsız dünyasından teknolojinin etkisiyle beraber uzaklaşıldığı ve mevcut ekonomik sistemin yarattığı eşitsizliklerin daha da derinleştiği sonucuna varılmıştır.
