Optimistic entrepreneurs and new product introductions in high technology industries
(Academy of Management, 2018) Işıklar, Rukiye Işıl Yavuz; Dutta, D. K.; Soytaş, Mehmet Ali; Economics; YAVUZ IŞIKLAR, Rukiye Işil; SOYTAŞ, Mehmet Ali
This study examines how the relationship between past performance and new product introductions is influenced by entrepreneurial optimism. Based on the behavioral theory of the firm, we test how past performance suggest low performance relative to aspirations helps new ventures initiate strategic change, such as new product introductions. In contrast, high performance relative to aspirations tends to reinforce status quo. Moreover, we argue that when past performance falls below aspirations, new ventures founded by optimistic entrepreneurs are more likely to introduce new products than those with less optimistic entrepreneurs. We test our hypotheses using data from the Kauffman Firm Survey on 333 newly founded high technology new ventures in the U.S. Our results strongly support our interaction hypothesis. After controlling for the impact of several entrepreneurial and firm-level characteristics, we show that the rate of new product introductions is highest in ventures founded by optimistic entrepreneurs where the ventures have shown low prior performance relative to their aspirations.

Learning and knowledge in early internationalization research: past accomplishments and future directions
(Elsevier, 2012-01) Clercq, D. de; Sapienza, H. J.; Işıklar, Rukiye Işıl Yavuz; Zhou, L.; Economics; YAVUZ IŞIKLAR, Rukiye Işil
This article provides an evaluative overview of international entrepreneurship literature, in which the issues of learning and knowledge feature as central components underlying the causes, processes, and outcomes of early internationalization. We rely on Huber's (1991) categorization of five knowledge acquisition types – experiential learning, vicarious learning, searching, grafting, and congenital learning – to organize our review and to guide our examination of the literature. We discuss convergent findings in terms of conceptual and empirical issues and set forth areas for future research.

Survived, but cannot prosper! Examining through a liberal feminist lens the impact of gender inequality on the success of women-owned entrepreneurial ventures
(Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd., 2017) Dutta, D. K.; Işıklar, Rukiye Işıl Yavuz; Economics; Manolova, T. S.; Brush, C. G.; Edelman, L. F.; Robb, A.; Welter, F.; YAVUZ IŞIKLAR, Rukiye Işil
In this chapter, we examine the impact of gender inequality on the success of women-owned ventures, specifically in terms of the latter’s rate of survival and revenue growth. Utilizing liberal feminist theory as the conceptual lens, we test our hypotheses on 4744 US-based ventures founded in 2004 and surveyed over seven years, as part of the Kauffman Firm Survey. We find that while gender inequality does not have a significant impact on firm survival, it does negatively affect the venture’s revenue growth. At the same time, an absence of gender inequality has a significant positive impact on women-owned ventures, making them achieve much higher growth compared to their male-led counterparts. The study findings have important implications for public policy, institutional reforms, and availability of support services at the entrepreneurial ecosystem level.
