ArticlePublication Open Access Bringing new customs to an old village: rhetorical legitimation strategies in a peripheral country(Anadolu University Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences, 2024-03-25) Adiloğlu-Yalçınkaya, Leyla; Aviation Management; YALÇINKAYA, Leyla AdiloğluActors' efforts against surrounding institutional pressures to pursue legitimacy are critical. Although scholars have mainly focused on the importance of gaining legitimacy, little is known about the context-specific rhetorical strategies of the actors to legitimate the business model in a peripheral country. In this article, based on extensive material, efforts behind the legitimation of a new airline business model in a peripheral country were explored. This study employed a qualitative research method. The data set consisting of multiple secondary data was analyzed based on the content analysis. Drawing on new institutional theory, this study contributes to previous studies on legitimation and business models by showing actors’ arguments content and providing a more nuanced understanding of how actors work on legitimation and how they use context-specific explanations during this legitimation process.ArticlePublication Metadata only Existing barriers and suggested solutions for dealing with air passengers with specific access requirements: A systematic literature review(Elsevier, 2024-03) Martin-Domingo, Luis; Adiloğlu-Yalçınkaya, Leyla; Ertürk, Mehmet; Farkić, J.; Aviation Management; DOMINGO, Luıs Martın; YALÇINKAYA, Leyla Adiloğlu; ERTÜRK, MehmetThis paper reviews the existing literature concerned with air passengers with specific access requirements, often referred as passengers with disabilities (PwDs) or passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs). While accessibility in air transport is an emerging field of research, the literature lacks a more in-depth understanding of the barriers that air passengers face, which can guide future research and help practitioners in improving the services to this passenger segment. To this end, we conducted a systematic review of 50 peer-reviewed articles to explore how these challenges have been addressed in existing literature. The analysis expanded upon the established primary barrier categories (architectural, transport, communication and information, attitudinal, and technological). Within these categories, novel sub-groups of barriers were identified and proposed. The analysis further revealed the most suggested solutions to overcoming those barriers: i) legal obligations and standard operational procedures; ii) improving airport facilities and services; iii) digitalization of operations and services; iv) recommendations for improving cabin safety and accessibility; and v) training for airport and airline staff. This study emphasizes the importance of gaining a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by PwDs and calls for more collaborative efforts from various stakeholders to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of air travel. ArticlePublication Metadata only Centrality and connectivity analysis of the European airports: a weighted complex network approach(Taylor & Francis, 2023-02-23) Ersöz, Cem; Karaman, F.; Aviation Management; ERSÖZ, CemThis study aims to reveal the structure of the European Airport Network (EAN) using concepts from complex network theory by utilising 2019 passenger data collected from Eurostat. Initially, the EAN was explored by computing connectivity and centrality measures and their correlations. The community structure of the EAN was also examined by modularity maximisation using the relatively new Leiden algorithm. When the network was compared with simulated models, it was observed that the EAN had small-world and scale-free properties. To measure the hub performance of the airports, their binary betweenness centrality was compared with a weighted betweenness measure employing the ratio of geographical distance to passenger traffic between the nodes. A significant difference was observed between the two centrality measures.ArticlePublication Open Access The voice of the consumer on sVoD systems during covid-19: A service opportunity mining approach(Inst Superior Entre Douro & Vouga, 2022-01) Cadirci, T. O.; Gungor, A. S.; Kılıç, Sena; Aviation Management; KILIÇ, SenaElectronic word of mouth (e-WOM) is a vital channel for the exchange of customer-generated content. As the e-WOM messages created by consumers pile all around the Web, they generate an unbiased voice about products and services. With their high-level production in online environments, e-WOM message contributions go far beyond consumer decision-making. They become a vital source for gaining insights on designing and improving marketing offerings. The purpose of the study is to analyze service improvement opportunities for subscription-based video-on-demand (sVoD) services by exploring customer-generated eWOM messages. In addition to this, the study aims to comprehend the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on expectations, real feelings, and attitudes of customers towards its subscription-based video-on-demand services and to compare these emotions with those in the pre-pandemic period. Acting on customer-generated e-WOM messages for sVoD services, the paper provides a real-time analysis of monitoring customer needs and wants in a fast-moving service environment with topic-based sentiment analysis. The main procedures include data extraction and pre-processing, topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and opportunity analysis. When pre-covid and post-covid sentiments are compared, it is found that all sentiment scores have decreased, except for content diversity. The rich content offered by Amazon has led subscribers to take step to post positive comments about the platform. Addtionally, the results show possible service improvement opportunities in streaming quality, TV series content selection, use of commercials, and customer value generation in sVoD service encounters. The study identifies service improvement opportunities using data mining technology, which can provide a more in-depth understanding of consumer perceptions of marketing offerings and service quality. In addition, it analyzes the perceptions of consumers toward sVoD services in times of the Covid-19 pandemic.ArticlePublication Open Access Drivers and barriers in the diversification of airline business models in Turkey (1980-2020): An institutional logic perspective(Ege Academic Review, 2023-07) Adiloğlu-Yalçınkaya, Leyla; Aviation Management; YALÇINKAYA, Leyla AdiloğluThe primary objective of this study is to explore the diversification of airline business models in Turkey in four decades and show the reasons and logic behind the diversification from the institutional logic perspective. For this purpose, airline business models were examined, and critical events in the organizational field were explored based on secondary data. The case study research was conducted to explore the diversifications of the business model within institutional logic. The gathered data were examined with the content analysis method. The results show that multiple institutional logic (state and commercial logic) in the field can pave the way or prevent diversifying airline business models. Multiple logics shape the regulations and approaches of the state and other organizations in the field, and these changes may play a role as a barrier or driver for diversification. Each barrier and driver may affect each airline’s business model differently. This study contributes to business models and institutional logics literature by providing evidence of the effect of the pattern of approaches of the actors on the airline business models and by showing the relations between these approaches and institutional logicReviewPublication Open Access Airspace deregulation for UAM: Self-organizing VTOLs in metropoles(University Aviation Association, 2022) Aldemir, Hüseyin Önder; Üçler, Çağlar; Professional Flight Program; Aviation Management; ALDEMİR, Hüseyin Önder; ÜÇLER, ÇağlarSmall-scale aviation has been driven extensively by recent technological developments. Distinct micro/small scale mobility modes are being interlined, where automated Vertical Take-Off and Landing Aircraft (VTOLs) are being conceptualized for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the form of air taxi, cargo, disaster relief, or medical help. This implicates many simultaneous flights over cities, which is a significant challenge. Traditional air traffic control is customized for commercial aviation, and it is not suitable for the dynamic variation in the flight routes of UAM. Consequently, a literature review is conducted firstly for air traffic management subject to UAM. Then, as a critical finding, a self-organizing model integrating particularly micro/small scale UAM is proposed utilizing the swarm concept to leverage the autonomous behavior of VTOLs. Rules for self-organization are set, which are then discussed in conjunction with available technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). Finally, the basic concept definition is elaborated to determine challenges and future research.ArticlePublication Open Access The effect of COVID‐related EU state aid on the level playing field for airlines(MDPI, 2022-02) Martin-Domingo, Luis; Martín, J. C.; Aviation Management; DOMINGO, Luıs MartınState aid for airlines around the world has been a common practice during the COVID‐19 pandemic, as the air transport was one of the sectors most heavily affected. This study analyzes 27 cases of state aid to EU airlines between 1 March 2020 and 30 September 2021 with a total amount of €85 billion. The information was obtained from the area of competition of the European Commission (EC), which is the entity responsible for final approval. Results indicate that the largest EU economies (Germany and France), as well as some Northern European countries, are supporting national airlines more extensively. Airlines with a weaker financial performance before the pandemic were more likely to receive state aid. Government involvement in the airline industry during the recent health crisis will have an important influence on the level playing field (LPF) for airlines. It is still unclear how this will evolve in the future, but it seems that some airlines now resemble the public flag companies of the past.Book ChapterPublication Metadata only Competitive strategies in the airline industry(IGI Global, 2022) Sengur, F. K.; Aldemir, Hüseyin Önder; Akınet, M.; Aviation Management; ALDEMİR, Hüseyin ÖnderThe airline industry is a dynamic industry with intense competition. Although Turkey has a complex air network with 56 airports, thorough research has not been carried out applying complex network analysis to reveal the structure of the airport network in Turkey yet. Furthermore, the fact that Turkey is a developing economy and the role of air transport in this development is undeniable, and its use as a transit area due to its geopolitical location, together with social and political factors, makes it important to understand this air transport network in detail. Consequently, in this paper, Turkey's Airport Network (TAN) topology was explored by implementing concepts of complex network theory using domestic and international passenger flight data gathered from FlightRadar during the opening period after the first wave of Covid-19. The average path length and clustering coefficient for connectivity performance and centrality metrics (degree, betweenness, and closeness) were computed and the network correlations were also measured and compared with simulated random, small-world (SW), and scale-free (SF) network models. Also, structural similarities and differences with the air networks of other countries are revealed.Book ChapterPublication Metadata only A pandemic experience of remote working: Reflections on emotions(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Ergun, H. S.; Samur Teraman, S. B.; Yanıkoğlu, Özge Peksatıcı; Aviation Management; Batuk, S.; Torgalöz, A. Ö.; YANIKOĞLU, ÖzgeN/AArticlePublication Open Access Exploring strategic choices of airlines: A study in Turkish air transport industry(Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia, 2021-12-01) Aldemir, Hüseyin Önder; Şengür, F. K.; Ulukan, İ. C.; Aviation Management; ALDEMİR, Hüseyin ÖnderInter-firm competition in the field of aviation, which accelerates through liberalisation and globalisation trends, has been investigated by numerous studies in the post-deregulation era; however, it has not been adequately addressed in Turkish aviation market. The aim of this study is to unveil the business strategies and strategic typologies of Turkish passenger carriers, as well as the degree of involvement of firms in the strategic planning process, the current outlook, and the competitive structure of the Turkish passenger air transport industry. The research is designed in a way to collect data through interviews with senior executives of the airlines. In terms of findings, the study concludes that five scheduled airlines and three charter airlines have attempted to implement more than one generic strategy at the same time as an “integrated cost and differentiation strategy,” with the primary strategy being cost leadership. Moreover, the passenger carriers in question displayed the features of “analysers-defenders” mainly linked to the competitive typology viewpoint. This study is believed to lead to a deeper understanding of potential explanations why companies have made specific strategic choices regarding generic strategies and strategic approaches. Regulators, individual companies operating in the aviation industry and prospective companies, investors, etc. can use the results of the study to regulate the market, better understand their competitors, set their priorities and plans, evaluate, and assess the market.Conference paperPublication Metadata only Exploiting user-generated content for service improvement: Case airport twitter data(Springer, 2022-09) Aunimo, L.; Martin-Domingo, Luis; Aviation Management; DOMINGO, Luıs MartınThe study illustrates how airport collaborative networks can profit from the richness of data, now available due to digitalization. Using a co-creation process, where the passenger generated content is leveraged to identify possible service improvement areas. A Twitter dataset of 949497 tweets is analyzed from the four years period 2018–2021 – with the second half falling under COVID period - for 100 airports. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method was used for topic discovery and the lexicon-based method for sentiment analysis of the tweets. The COVID-19 related tweets reported a lower sentiment by passengers, which can be an indication of lower service level perceived. The research successfully created and tested a methodology for leveraging user-generated content for identifying possible service improvement areas in an ecosystem of services. One of the outputs of the methodology is a list of COVID-19 terms in the airport context.Book ChapterPublication Metadata only The political economy of the board of directors: The case of Turkish Airlines (1956–2020)(Springer Singapore, 2022) Adiloğlu-Yalçınkaya, Leyla; Yalçınkaya, A.; Aviation Management; Kiracı, K.; Tunca Çalıyurt, K.; YALÇINKAYA, Leyla AdiloğluTurkish Airlines, the first civil airline organization in Turkey, has positioned itself as a flag carrier. This research, introduces a general framework for measuring ASQ using passengers’ tweets about airports. The proposed framework considers tweets in any language, not just in English, to support ASQ evaluation in non-speaking English countries where passengers communicate with other languages. Accordingly, this work uses a large dataset that includes tweets in two languages (English and Arabic) and from four airports. Additionally, to extract passenger evaluations from tweets, our framework applies two different deep learning models (CNN and LSTM) and compares their results. The two models are trained with both general data and data from the aviation domain in order to clarify the effect of data type on model performance. Results show that better performance is achieved with the LSTM model when trained with domain specific data. This study has clear implications for researchers and airport managers aiming to use alternative methods to measure ASQ.ArticlePublication Open Access Innovation at airports: A systematic literature review (2000–2019)(Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2021-09-29) Kılıç, Sena; Üçler, Çağlar; Martin-Domingo, Luis; Professional Flight Program; Aviation Management; ÜÇLER, Çağlar; DOMINGO, Luıs Martın; KILIÇ, SenaAirports operate in a highly-competitive and challenging environment. Therefore, in order to remain competitive, innovation is imperative for airports. This paper aims to conduct academic research into innovation at airports by reviewing studies published from 2000 to 2019 for presenting key findings. A systematic literature review was made based on scientific papers indexed in Scopus with the keywords innovation and airport in the title, abstract or keywords sections, consolidating the innovation focus, approach and degree discussed with respect to innovation areas and territorial focal points. Consequently, it was found that research on airport innovation is: (i) mainly focused on products/services, (ii) concerned with leveraging ICT (Informatıon Communication Technology), (iii) implemented ad-hoc without a consolidated strategic approach, and (iv) lacks the input of external innovation scholars and specialists.BookPublication Open Access Havayolu iş modellerinin değişimi: Türk hava yolları ve pegasus havayolları üzerine bir araştırma(Nobel, 2021-11-01) Adiloğlu-Yalçınkaya, Leyla; Aviation Management; YALÇINKAYA, Leyla AdiloğluBu kitapta, Türkiye havayolu yolcu taşımacılığı örgütsel alanında farklı tarihlerde kurulmuş, uzun yıllar faaliyetlerini sürdürmeyi başarmış, farklı iş modellerine sahip Türk Hava Yolları A.Ş. ve Pegasus Hava Taşımacılığı A.Ş.’nin iş modellerinin nasıl değiştiği, yeni kurumsal kuram ve kaynak bağımlılığı kuramı çerçevesinde ele alınmaktadır. R.; Arunodaya Raj, M.; Ertürk, Mehmet; Aviation Management; ERTÜRK, MehmetAircraft’s training is crucial for a flight training organization (FTO). Therefore, an important decision that these organizations should wisely consider the choice of aircraft to be bought among many alternatives. The criteria for evaluating the optimal training aircraft for FTOs are collected based on the survey approach. Single valued neutrosophic sets (SVNS) have the degree of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity membership functions and, as a special case, neutrosophic sets (NS) deal with inconsistent environments. In this regard, this study has extended a single-valued neutrosophic analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based on multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis plus a full multiplicative form (MULTIMOORA) to rank the training aircraft as the alternatives. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is performed to demonstrate the stability of the developed method. Finally, a comparison between the results of the developed approach and the existing approaches for validating the developed approach is discussed. This analysis shows that the proposed approach is efficient and with the other methods.
