Risk analysis of ports in maritime industry in Turkey using fmea based intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS approach
(EDP Sciences, 2018) Senel, M.; Senel, B.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Today, international trade is extremely important for countries' economies. It is possible to show the ship's transport as one of the most important execution channels of this trade. International commercial maritime transport subject to many rules and regulations carries many risks in processes such as loading, handling and unloading. Commercial ports are the places where these risks are seen intensely. From this point, many risk components in terms of the process in the port, one of the international commercial port in Turkey, based on a risk analysis is tried to be evaluated in this study. Especially, loading and unloading processes are focused with the directions of industrial experts. The main dimensions of the risks in the port are determined via expert opinions, and the sub-criteria of these dimensions are revealed. In this way, a generic model is proposed based on failure mode and effect analysis and the model is digitized using intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS. Interpretations are made in the direction of the obtained analysis results.

From lean towards frugal product development
(IGI Global, 2020-11-06) Üçler, Çağlar; Gupta, R. K.; Professional Flight Program; ÜÇLER, Çağlar
Frugal innovation is considered as a disruptive growth strategy for businesses that focuses on the utilization of limited resources of rural areas. Similarly, lean management targets to develop new products in accordance with the customer requirements while managing the wastage. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight a pathway to frugal product development through lean management experiences. This is particularly of interest to developing territories and rural areas due to their innate characteristics. The analysis highlighted that innovation ideas have high diffusion rates if the product configuration is properly conducted. Despite the common objectives of lean and frugal development, this chapter investigates distinguishing features and conducts a comparison of both methodologies in order to provide specific guidance for companies that follow lean management to capture the benefits of frugal product development.

Modernizing data and cloud practices: A review and model proposal for future studies
(IEEE, 2023) Havle, Celal Alpay; Kılıç, Sena; Üçler, Çağlar; Professional Flight Program; Aviation Management; HAVLE, Celal Alpay; KILIÇ, Sena; ÜÇLER, Çağlar
The interaction of society is transforming towards connectivity and digital experiences. This results in big data which cannot be utilized and managed by companies in an efficient way. Despite various applications of the cloud and other advanced technologies, companies cannot distinguish essential information adequately. Consequently, there is a need for data modernization, but there are only partial modernization solutions and no incorporative model. Thus, a literature review was leveraged to isolate 15 related criteria, which are then grouped under 3 main dimensions (i) business, (ii) organizational and cultural, and (iii) technical, which then delivers a generic model suitable to guide and measure the transformation of companies.

Customer-focused aircraft seat design: A case study with AHP-QFD
(Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2023-11-23) Yilmaz Çetin, A.; Üçler, Çağlar; Professional Flight Program; ÜÇLER, Çağlar
Aviation is rapidly expanding and recovering from the pandemic impact driven by the experience economy. This is particularly subject to interfaces such as the aircraft seats, which are getting intense attention as a differentiator in the cabin. The focal point of this paper is to assess and convert customer requirements into what must be done for an optimum aircraft seat. To achieve this, a 2-step analytic hierarchy process and quality function deployment (AHP-QFD) methodology was successfully applied, consolidating product quality characteristics. Then, it leverages a novel scoring method of interdependencies to isolate dependable design variables. Consequently, safety, weight, and durability scored maximum, emphasizing backrest design and alternative composite materials, while test infrastructure was determined as a critical investment component. Furthermore, it is shown how AHP-QFD can be used for product strategy and strategic portfolio management of R&D projects.

Sustainable future technology evaluation with digital transformation perspective in air cargo industry using IF ANP method
(Springer, 2023) Havle, Celal Alpay; Büyüközkan, G.; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Sustainability is one of the most critical issues of recent years. Many companies that contribute to the global economy focus on sustainability studies more than ever. On the other hand, technological developments lead companies to digital transformation. This situation necessitated the adoption of a sustainability approach that includes digital transformation and digital technologies. Therefore, it is critical for companies embarking on a transformation journey to invest in technologies that support sustainability. Advances in technology and digital transformation have contributed to the growth of e-commerce volume globally. However, this has led to the growth and complexity of supply chain networks. One of the biggest players in this network structure is undoubtedly the air cargo industry. The air cargo industry plays a critical role in the sustainability of the global economy, employment, social development, and the environment. Therefore, this study proposes a new model for the evaluation of sustainable future technologies in the air cargo industry from the perspective of digital transformation. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was adopted in the study. The intuitionistic fuzzy analytical network process (IF ANP) is used to validate the proposed model in a real case conducted in the Turkish air cargo industry.

The impact of leadership styles on performance and mediating effect of organizational culture: A study in flight schools
(Elsevier, 2022) Gökalp, Pınar Horasanlı; Soran, Semih; Professional Flight Program; SORAN, Semih; HORASANLI, Pinar
Nowadays, the aviation sector is growing rapidly and the need for human resources in the airline industry is increasing. In order to meet the increasing pilot need, the number of flight schools and universities that provide pilot training with the support of relevant authorities is also increasing. This increase in the number of student pilots is accompanied by questions about how to ensure the continuity of quality and safety in flight training. In this context, it is very important for the flight schools to evaluate the variables that may affect the student pilot performance and to take the necessary precautions. In our study teacher leadership and organizational culture are assessed as important variables and examined. In aviation literature, there is a very small number of explanatory studies on flight performance and leadership. Additionally, no study has been found on teacher leadership of student pilots. In this context, how leadership styles affect student pilots' performances positively and negatively was investigated in our research. Organizational culture is considered as an important predictor of performance in today's organizations. In this context, it has emerged that studies have been carried out that the organizational culture is an important variable in improving organizational and individual performance. Leadership styles of teacher pilots and organizational culture have been explored in the student pilots' performance process. In this context, our work has included performance, leadership styles and organizational culture. Regarding the methodology part of this study, 151 student pilots in the flight training organizations formed the universe and a survey was conducted, analysed and explained. Considering the effect of dynamic leadership, the present study analysed the impact of leadership and culture on flight performance. It is assumed that the most effective leadership styles can be found within group dynamics consisting of members who have diverse and individual cultural orientations. Individual differences that are caused by cultural norms can be considered as the outcomes of leadership behaviour. It was concluded that flight crew leadership cannot be analysed without considering the culture variable since behaviour is influenced by both individual and environmental factors. Moreover, since the performance outcomes of the crew resource management were evaluated, the cultural attitude of the crew and leader was considered.

Digital technology and the stages of digital business transformation
(IEEE, 2022) Mutlu, Irmak; den Hartigh, Erik; Üçler, Çağlar; Entrepreneurship; Professional Flight Program; HARTIGH, Erık Den; ÜÇLER, Çağlar; Mutlu, Irmak
Companies use digital technology to transform their business. Digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation have been proposed as stages in this business transformation process. Researchers have also proposed a variety of maturity models to assess this transformation. The distinctions and the ontology between the stages of digital transformation are not always clearly defined. Using expert interviews and literature review this paper derived a domain-specific ontology from commonly expressed keywords. Based on this, five stages of digital transformation were distinguished and defined: (i) digital passive, (ii) digitization, (iii) digitalization, (iv) digital transition and (v) digital transformation. These five stages may be used in further research as a rubric to assess digital business transformation.

Intuitionistic fuzzy cognitive map based analysis of supply chain risks
(Springer, 2021) Büyüközkan, G.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Feyzioğlu, O.; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Supply chains (SCs) are network-like structures and gigantic systems. Such systems are complex and multifaceted. Therefore, they contain many components and risk factors that are directly or indirectly related to each other. The importance of SCs, which has always been important for companies, is increasing day by day. Therefore, it is vital to focus on supply chain management (SCM) and the risk factors encountered in this management process. Plus, the investigation of the cause-effect relationships, evaluation, and analysis of these factors hold a critical role for SCM. Accordingly, this study aims to reveal the risk factors that should be considered in SCM and analyze these factors. Moreover, the causal relationships of these risk factors are aimed to be revealed. For this purpose, Cognitive Map (CM) approach is utilized. The classical CM approach is expanded to the intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) environment and used as the IFCM approach to eliminate the uncertainty and intuition involved in real-life problems and decision-making processes. SC risk factors’ importance degrees and causal relations between the factors are displayed and visualized.

    Fatigue among student pilots
(Aerospace Medical Association, 2021-01) Kılıç, Bilal; Professional Flight Program; KILIÇ, Bilal
INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is an important phenomenon in modern aviation. Despite the progress in research concerning fatigue among civil aviation and military pilots, fatigue in student pilots has remained unexamined. The aim of this study was to examine fatigue among ab-initio pilots. In this study, the fatigue model previously proposed and used in the literature is redesigned for ab-initio pilots. METHOD: A 48-item questionnaire was applied. Factor analysis was performed using SPSS. The data were collected from 114 ab-initio pilots. RESULTS: It was determined that 23% (N = 26) of the participants included in the study were women and 77% (N = 88) were men. When the license types of the participants were analyzed, it was seen that 11% (N = 13) had commercial pilot licenses (CPL; N = 80), 70% had private pilot licenses (PPL), and 18% (N = 21) had student pilot licenses (SPL). Results showed that seven performance factors (types of flight, training scheduling, crew composition, environment of the aircraft, types of accommodation, flight training-related issues, and biological issues) affect ab-initio pilots' fatigue on various levels. DISCUSSION: The findings may help flight training organizations and ab-initio pilots take assertive preventive measures against fatigue.

    Self-medication among ab initio pilots
(Aerospace Medical Association, 2021-03) Kılıç, Bilal; Professional Flight Program; KILIÇ, Bilal
INTRODUCTION: Pilots are more aware of drugs and self-medication in the internet age. However, they are unaware of the effects of self-medication, which may impede their cognitive and decision-making performance. The aim of this study was to determine the awareness levels of ab initio (student) pilots on self-medication and factors contributing to the prevalence of self-medication among them. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study examining ab initio pilots’ knowledge on medication use and the causality of self-medication among them. METHODS: A 17-item questionnaire was developed and administered online to 500 students across 5 flight training organizations (FTO) in Turkey. The response rate was 97/500. For the descriptive analysis of the data, SPSS (the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) was used. RESULTS: Based on the results, fear of medical disqualification and job loss is the most significant factor resulting in the prevalence of self-medication among ab initio pilots. Most of the ab initio pilots (88.7%, N 5 86) were aware of self-medication and its threat to flight safety. Furthermore, three factors influencing the level of awareness and knowledge of ab initio pilots on this subject were evaluated. DISCUSSION: All flight training organizations should educate ab initio pilots on the consequences of self-medication. Furthermore, ab initio pilots should be encouraged to consult an aeromedical examiner with any ailment before a flight.

(Springer, 2020) Büyüközkan, G.; Feyzioğlu, O.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Professional Flight Program; Kahraman, C.; Cebi, S.; Onar, S. C.; Oztaysi, B.; Tolga, A. C.; Sari, I. U.; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Recently, emerging digital technologies have launched digital transformation, and it has become a factor that determines the competitiveness of companies, their performance, and digital sustainability. At this point, the aviation industry is one of the areas where digital transformation applications are visible. Both airlines and airports have initiated their digital transformation processes. Just like industry 4.0, the period of aviation 4.0 including airline 4.0 and airport 4.0 has started. Hence, the success of the companies in the aviation industry has become extremely important for their sustainability in terms of aviation 4.0. The aim of this study is then to analyze the success factors of aviation 4.0. The factors are obtained via the literature survey and expert opinions. An integrated approach is used based on intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision making (IF MCDM) techniques. The weights of the success criteria are calculated by using the IF AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). IF VIKOR (Vise Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) method is used for selection of the most successful company among alternatives. IF helps to eliminate the complexity of real-life problems, an uncertainty of decision-making processes and it allows us to consider hesitation and intuition of decision makers.

A combined group decision making based IFCM and SERVQUAL approach for strategic analysis of airline service quality
(IOS Press, 2020) Buyukozkan, G.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Feyzioglu, O.; Gocer, F.; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Transportation becomes increasingly important for global trade, mobility, and economies. Passengers expect speed and quality from transportation services. As a result, the demand for air transportation is steadily rising. Higher demand for flights brings along new expectations and competition. In particular, airline companies are focused on service quality, knowing that it is a necessity to survive in a competitive market by meeting customer expectations. Hence, it is aimed that to analyze Airline Service Quality (ASQ) in Turkey. A SERVQUAL based model is developed and the criteria of the model is analyzed using group decision making (GDM) based intuitionistic fuzzy cognitive map (IFCM) approach. A real case is conducted in Turkey airline industry. By considering the hesitation, uncertainty and intuition of decision-making processes and the opinions of the decision makers, classical FCM approach is expanded to IF environment. Decision makers who are experts in Turkey airline industry, evaluate the relationship between the criteria. The importance ratings of the criteria are determined. Thanks to dynamic structure of IFCM, scenario analysis is performed to make strategic decisions. Originality of the paper is that it is the first study dealing with GDM based IFCM and SERVQUAL approach for ASQ in Turkey to the best of our knowledge.

Awareness level of airline pilots on flight-associated venous thromboembolism
(National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2020-04) Kılıç, Bilal; Soran, Semih; Professional Flight Program; KILIÇ, Bilal; SORAN, Semih
INTRODUCTION: Studies have identified a great number of physiological conditions, including venous thromboembolism and hypoxia, that may give rise to medical disqualifications and in-flight incapacitations that can be costly to individuals and organizations. Over the past three decades, much attention has been focused on venous thromboembolism among passengers. However, studies on venous thromboembolism among commercial airline pilots are very scarce. With this consideration in mind, differently from the literature, this study set out to examine pilots' awareness of venous thromboembolism signs, symptoms, risk factors, and countermeasures. METHODS: For this purpose, a venous thromboembolisrn questionnaire was developed and applied to collect data. There were 427 airline pilots who participated in the questionnaire. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to analyze the results of the questionnaire. RESULTS: According to the results of this study, approximately one-half (57.1%) of the participants had just heard of this particular health issue and 63.9% of the participants were unaware of flight-associated venous thromboembolism. Airline pilots between 20 and 40 yr of age were much less aware of venous thromboembolism in comparison to pilots 41 yr or older, and pilots flying more than 90 h/mo were at a greater risk. DISCUSSION: Airline pilots between 20 and 40 yr have less knowledge about venous thromboembolism and preventive measures against it in comparison to older pilots. Therefore they may be more vulnerable to possible risk factors. The findings of this study will contribute to increasing pilots'awareness on flight-related venous thromboembolism and can improve the overall safety of civil aviation.

A new digital service quality model and its strategic analysis in aviation industry using interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy AHP
(Elsevier, 2020-07) Buyukozkan, G.; Havle, Celal Alpay; Feyzioglu, O.; Professional Flight Program; HAVLE, Celal Alpay
Today, airline companies have to provide digital products and services to ensure customer satisfaction. Accordingly, classical service quality models are not sufficient to capture customer expectations, and new digital service quality (DSQ) models should emerge. This study aims to propose a new and genuine DSQ model. The proposed model consists of digital tangibles, reliability, digital interaction, digital trust, and customer-centricity dimensions; and 35 criteria related to them. Importance degrees of criteria are determined with the IVIF AHP method. The validity of the proposed model is verified, employing a real case concerning the Turkish airline industry. The results show that the most significant dimension is digital trust, and the three most important criteria are proactive customer service, cybersecurity, and customer insight.

Exacerbating effect of energy prices on resource curse: Can research and development be a mitigating factor?
(Elsevier, 2020-08) Gu, J. Q.; Umar, M.; Soran, Semih; Yue, X. G.; Professional Flight Program; SORAN, Semih
This study investigates the impact of natural resources in the presence of research and development and energy prices on the improvement of financial development for the Group of Seven (G7) economies for the period of 1990-2017. In doing so, the study employs a cross-sectional dependence test, Westerlund cointegration approach, and Common Correlated Effect Mean Group methods. Moreover, for robustness checks, this study uses cross-sectionally augmented ARDL (CS-ARDL) and augmented mean group (AMG) tests. Unlike previous studies, our study uses a multidimensional approach to financial development, which captures the performance, accessibility, and depth of both financial institutions and markets. The outcomes indicate that natural resource abundance for G-7 countries helps expand financial development. In contrast, rising energy prices adversely affect the expansion of financial development. However, research and development expenditures increase financial development. From the empirical findings, this study suggests the promotion of research and development expenditures, control the increasing energy prices to further benefit from the abundance of natural resources in G-7 economies.
