Air cargo strategies

Introduction about a research project which categorized cargo airline’s strategy from a sample of 47 airlines from all over the world, using cluster analysis methodology to identify 7 different cargo strategies: 1) Cargos stars, 2) Large Pax wide-body operators, 3) Carpet sellers, 4) Premium air cargo operators, 5) Strong regionals, 6) Basic cargo operators and 7) Huge americans. For a successful Istanbul cargo hub he recommended to have a strong long haul passenger home cargo carrier with cargo strategy in place and focus on the growing parts of cargo as e-commerce.

Airline hub strategies: a tale of two airport

Examples to such airlines may be British Airways (BA), operating from London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW) and London City (LCY) airports; Delta Airlines (DL), operating from John F. Kennedy (JFK), Newark (EWR) and La Guardia (LGA) in New York; Turkish Airlines (THY), operating from Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW); Air France (AF), operating from Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY) airports and Japan Airlines (JAL), operating from Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT).

Aviation industry, Turkish airlines and future of Istanbul Airport

Dr. Kotil introduced aviation as on of the best business in the world, that will doubled the number of passengers in 20 years and triple in Turkey. Among the different regions of the word Africa and Asia were highlighted as the main growing regions. A cargo airline towards Istanbul new airport

Following Hasan Tasus, MNG’s Ground Operations Director Serkan Eren took the stage. He talked about various aspects of the airline cargo market. We learned that global cargo growth rates have outperformed that of trade recently and that the growth is mostly coming from emerging economies including Turkey. Serkan Eren explained their cargo operation plans at Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA). He presented the challenges his company is facing in the industry. We learned that Turkey’s logistic performance rate went down between the years 2012-2016. Serkan Eren answered few questions from the audience before finishing his speech.

Economic, social and environmental impacts of 3rd airport in Istanbul

Evolution of Istanbul Ataturk Airport as a hub

TAV Airports Holding has a contract to operate Istanbul Ataturk Airport until 2021 and New Airport is planned to be opened in 2017. Mr. Dogan gives the insights of TAV Airports Company which currently operates 14 airports in Europe, Middle East and North Africa. Then he mentions the general characteristics of a Hub Airport, advantages of Istanbul to be a hub point and how Istanbul Ataturk Airport copes with the traffic growth and congestion.

The CEO of Istanbul New Airport, Mr. Genc Justifies the need of a new airport in Istanbul with latest statistics. He explains the timeline of the project both construction and operation period. The new airport is planned as a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) Project. Then he give insights for member companies of consortium and their obligations to governmental bodies. He highlights the importance of master planning and how New Airport master plan has been prepared. He also shows some examples of new innovational techniques and technologies that they are planning to implement. At the end of his presentation, Mr. Genc explains the Environmental Management System of Project.

Istanbul new airport and cargo city

Abdullah Nergiz, who is the current marketing director of İstanbul New Airport, began his speech by summarizing the shift of economy from west to east and effects of this shift on aviation. He stressed the need for a new airport in İstanbul. Then he continued his presentation by introducing the tender of New İstanbul Airport: IGA. IGA is a consortium which comprises 5 different companies and each company has 20 percent share in the project. Project has 4 different phases and each phase will be triggered by the passenger numbers. Project’s first phase is going to be completed by November 2018 and the capacity will be 80 million passengers per year. When the airport reaches that 80 million passengers per year, they will start to build the 2nd phase. After completing the all four phases, airport will have 6 runways, 2 terminal buildings and the capacity for 150 million passengers per year. Project has secured for 4,5 billion Euros credit from banks and also shareholders invested 1,5 billion euros. This total 6 billion euros will be enough for the construction of first phase. Also tender – IGA – already started to make commercial agreements with duty free companies, cargo companies and airlines.

The Key Airport Challenges

Ms. Graham started with the main reason of airport expansion which is traffic growth and followed by the main expansion options: 1) Expanding existing airport; 2) Building a new airport; and 3) Spreading the traffic in a multi-airport system. She used mainly international examples of each option and described the main expansion and traffic hub issues. For instance, whether to close or to keep existing airports. She explain more in detail the London multi-airport system case and highlighted some of the implications for Istanbul.

The introduction to the seminar by Rector Dr. Geçtürk highlighted three elements: 1) The Istanbul Hub Seminar organization came only few days after the organizers changed the status from School of Aviation to Faculty of Aviation and Aeronautical Science; 2) The discussion about the new airport and the strategies of airlines on the new environment is a perfect example of Ozyegin university philosophy in offering to its students sectorial discussion and analysis as a complement of a world class academical technical education; and 3) The importance that the university gives to learning outside of the classroom is achieved by initiatives like this seminar that involves in the organization not only aviation students but also students from other disciplines.

Ozyegin University’s Rector as one of the most loyal attendees of the Istanbul Hub Seminar made its third Keynote Speech. She stressed two of the main objectives of the Seminar, in line with the university vision and mission: Firstly, combining academia, industry and students to discuss the developments of Istanbul as an aviation centre; Secondly, complementing education for students taking place in the classroom with more academic and industry activities like this seminar. Dr. Gençtürk reviewed the topics touched on the previous editions: In 2015 edition How Istanbul was becoming an Aviation Centre; In 2016 edition looking at the strategies of airlines in Istanbul with the new airport; and and this 2017 edition by looking at the air cargo and logistic strategies for Istanbul hub.

MNG Group and airlines introduction

MNG’s Commercial Director Hasan Tasus started his speech by thanking our faculty and MNG Airlines for the event. He went on to introduce MNG Group and gave detailed information about the company. We learned that MNG Group operates in many different industries. We also learned that MNG is a full-freighter airline founded in 1996. Mr Tasus then gave detailed information regarding the cargo operations his company is doing. He explained MNG’s hub-and-spoke system through Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST) and their co-operations with other airlines in different countries. He also told us about their truck network based in Europe. Mr Tasus defined themselves to be focused on flight safety, service quality, and reliability as well as to have a profit based approach to market.

The New Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) Status

Mr Irfan Gündüz started his speech by stating that the Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) is aimed to be opened in the beginning of 2018. He further stated the new airport project is conducted on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. The airport will be managed by the company for 25 years before it is transferred to another company in 2043. He thinks that IGA will fulfill both airlines’s and ground handling company’s as well as passengers’ needs.

The round table included most of the speakers of the seminar and covered the following topics: Extra capacity for the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International airport, implication of bilateral agreements multilateral agreements between Turkey and the EU members, airlines merger and acquisitions of airlines in Turkey and was completed with suggestions to students about the aviation sector.

The transition of the actual two airports system (Istanbul Ataturk - IST and Sabiha Gokcen - SAW), with the capacity shortages, into the new airport System (Istanbul New Airport and Sabiha Gokcen) was discussed. The optimal airport ownership structure for Istanbul case was compared with the London case. Critical points to achieve high quality of service as for instance the passenger experience and staff attitude. The round table was completed with the skills and training necessary for the airport sector.

The round table covered two main group of questions, the “hardware” of the air cargo, having capacity as the main topic and the “software”, with customs as the central point. A combination of competition and collaboration among the two Istanbul airports was considered a good approach to develop the Istanbul Air Cargo Hub as the geographical location is there and very soon the extra capacity. Customs recent achievements were mentioned, but still some way to go if aiming to become a world class hub. In the growth of air cargo, e-commerce should be paid close attention.
