PresentationPublication Open Access Melting Pot of Library and IT Culture in a New Turkish University: a Journey towards Multi Anything(2009-01-06) Cribb, Gülçin; Library; CRIBB, GülçinThis paper will discuss the creation of a converged organisation consisting of information technology and library professionals at a newly established, private and not-for-profit university in Turkey. During the planning and implementation phases, the challenges encountered included cultural, professional, sectoral and generational differences. Some of the opportunities were: - creation of a brand new organisation, planning and delivering information services jointly with a team drawn from both Information Technology (IT) and library, and managing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) projects with a hybrid team whose members came from a wide range of backgrounds.Techniques such as policy development, internal marketing, cross-sectoral team building, staff development, project management framework and coaching were employed as part of the process to create the converged organisation. The paper will argue that the process and outcomes are part of a long and multi-faceted journey and will discuss future plans for the University and the Information Services team.As this is the first converged library and IT structure in a university in Turkey, the process did not involve the traditional change management strategies usually employed in organisations which have been in existence for some time. Strategies usually adopted in start-up organisations were found to be more appropriate in the case of Ozyegin University, as the establishment and development of the university as a whole were undertaken in an entrepreneurial way common to start-up organisations.PresentationPublication Open Access Üniversitelerde Bilişim Yönetişimi: Oraya Vardık Mı Henüz?(2009-05-29) Cribb, Gülçin; Library; CRIBB, GülçinÜniversitelerde bilişim yönetişiminin önemi büyüktür. That’s why it should be embedded into the curriculum in higher education institutions so that libraries can act accordingly. This brings integration of the library resources into the online learning environments, sharing the same platform with the actual teaching and learning dynamics. Today’s technology offers course management systems (CMS) as online learning environment. This tool gives libraries an opportunity to serve their number of e-resources as they needed and to bring up information literates with set of skills to find, evaluate, analyse and use the information. This poster will cover Ozyegin University’s experience on integration of library services into the CMS. Changing role of the librarian and cooperation between faculty members and the librarian is another dynamic in this integration. Even though it is in a brand new university with one and half year past, the contribution was huge both from the faculty and the library in understanding the need and exercising it. Faculty librarian, the first contact person for Information Services, enrols in courses upon faculty’s permission, then follows the outline, assignments, homework, reading lists. Thus the librarian knows literally all about skill and resource needs for the course. Librarian’s role is to provide guides on given topics, links to the right resources, using reading lists for collection development and being ready for live forums with students’ questions. Consequently the information is given as it is needed; skill set is developed for the right purpose, awareness is increased for the services and resources. Conference paperPublication Open Access Online space displacing physical space in libraries; the impact of online use on the transformation of library design(ALIA, 2011-03-18) Cribb, Gülçin; Schmidt, J.; Library; CRIBB, GülçinThe basis of designing library spaces has been transformed. Initial views that online technologies would reduce the use of library space have not come to pass. The physical space remains important but much change has occurred. The focus has changed from an emphasis on housing of physical collections, accommodating staff and servicing users at desks, to highlighting the use of information technology in libraries and stressing user preferences for space utilisation. The pace and extent of the transformation have varied according to cultural values in various parts of the world and over time. From the east to the west, there have been significant differences. There have been varying interpretations of user behaviour and needs. Different approaches to the philosophical basis of librarianship have also affected the views of library space. Also of significance is the view of pedagogy taken in individual institutions and regions. Learner-based approaches, the increased availability of learning management systems tailored to individual use, the importance of group learning, and the growth of social networks have led to fundamental re-thinking of all spaces provided in libraries and learning institutions. The increasing use of mobile technology is causing further re-examination of space design. Common themes have developed which emphasize the need for flexibility, the importance of accommodating e-learning and m-learning, spaces for groups and areas for individual quiet study, and the emergence of self-service points, as well as those providing assistance. High tech still requires the high personal touch. The speakers will address the issues and highlight principles of library design, which should be followed, providing perspectives and examples from their Australian, Canadian, European and Turkish experience.PresentationPublication Open Access İş Başvurusu İş Görüşmeleri(2011-05-16) Cribb, Gülçin; Library; CRIBB, GülçinBu sunum iş görüşmesi öncesi adayın yapması gereken hazırlıklar ve iş görüşmesi sonrası yapılması tavsiye edilenler konusunda bilgi vermeyi hedeflemektedir.PresentationPublication Open Access 21. They communicate constantly, tapping and swiping I-Phones, I-Pads and androids as they broadcast their daily activities via Twitter and Facebook. They rarely sit still and do nothing and do not discriminate in using technology between their personal and professional lives – studying, working and living are all integrated in the mashed-up infosphere. They are readers, viewers, listeners, writers and speakers and use a variety of media. What use do they make of libraries? What do they want from us? How do library buildings accommodate their needs? One emerging trend is the need for silence – the generation who communicates constantly via their fingers and thumbs and the photographic record seems to want quieter spaces in libraries. They remain voyeurs and view others at work and play – but more silently it seems, although they still want opportunities to meet with others and discuss learning and life – preferably with food and drink. They are serious about what they do and want to be treated with respect and empathy. Digital natives want their information resources delivered seamlessly with voice and vision included, not just words on paper or on a screen. In Google we Trust is their mantra and if it is on the web, it must be true. Digital natives have difficulty evaluating what they find and tend to regard all information as equal in value. Their approach to scholarship and learning needs to be developed. They regard the full output of scholarly work in one continuum whether it is real or virtual. And the library buildings for this generation? Digital natives want attractive buildings which are easy to use and provide pleasant environments and a relaxing space with plenty of technology. They want to plug in, power up and prowl the internet. They want “high tech” but they also want “high touch”. They want individual personalized help wherever they might be – and at varying times of day – my place, my space, my time – and targeted to my needs. The paper explores the needs of digital natives and some of the possible changes in library building design to accommodate the shifting sand of user needs.Conference paperPublication Open Access Student Engagement and Library Use: An Examination of Attitudes Towards Use of Libraries and Information Amongst Undergraduate Students at a Turkish University Library(2012-12-06) Cribb, G.; Holt, İlkay; Library; HOLT, IlkayThe competitive environment in which university libraries operate and provide their services and resources is one of the biggest challenges to engage today’s undergraduate students. There is a limited amount of high quality attention and time students have, to be able to be engaged with what the library offers to them. Planning and designing library awareness and information literacy programs, particularly for new students has presented itself as an on-going challenge for librarians worldwide in recent times. However, the goalpost keeps on moving and the players are becoming more restless, demanding and seeking instant gratification. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study that examines undergraduate students’ experience with research, library and information use prior to coming to university and their behaviour and attitude towards library and information after they have been exposed to a variety of library awareness activities and received information literacy training during their first year at Ozyegin University in Turkey. Students take a compulsory “Introduction to University’ subject during their first semester taught by both internal and external experts on a wide range of topics including ‘Journey of Information’ presented by library staff. The Library is also involved in the subsequent delivery of information literacy programs throughout students’ university programs in an on-going effort to engage them and to get them involved in university-wide activities. The library staff works as partners with the faculty and other student support services in designing, delivering and evaluating these programs. A variety of social media tools, such as Facebook, twitter and blogs as well as competitions, games, face-to-face interactions in and outside the library have been used to engage the students. Majority of new students spend up to a year undertaking intensive English preparatory classes. The curriculum for the ESL (English as a Second Language) program includes a learning portfolio linking various levels of English competency with each other (e.g. elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate etc.) to ensure students complete the program not only with sufficient English language competency but also with information and life skills to help them throughout their studies and further. The research will examine what impact the library’s efforts to engage students in library and information use and their learning and research has had by comparing their pre-university experience, expectations and knowledge and skills about libraries and information use.ArticlePublication Metadata only Corrigendum to "ANKOS publisher application system and its impact on the e-resource evaluation process"(Informa Group, 2013) Bulut, B.; Uğur, H.; Gürdal, G.; Holt, İlkay; Çukadar, S.; Akbayrak, E. H.; Çelebi, M. K.; Library; HOLT, IlkayArticlePublication Open Access ANKOS publisher application system and its impact on the e-resource evaluation process(Elsevier, 2013-03) Bulut, B.; Uğur, H.; Gürdal, G.; Holt, İlkay; Çukadar, S.; Akbayrak, E. H.; Çelebi, M. K.; Library; HOLT, IlkayThe Publisher Application System (PAS) is a Web-based archiving and online evaluation system developed by the Database Evaluation Group (DEG), one of the working groups formed within the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS). The DEG was formed in 2008 to inquire and evaluate e-resources suited to the needs of the consortium; to follow up similar consortial activities worldwide as well as developments in connection with the scientific publishing industry; and to determine, implement, and improve pricing models in accordance with the prevailing economic, legal, and academic system. Development of the PAS was essential to ensure standardization and sustainability towards a more detailed and effective analysis of e-resources qualifying for evaluation by ANKOS. The PAS played an important part not only in establishing and defining the workflow of the DEG, but also in creating an archive of both the e-resources submitted to the consortium and the applicant publishers/agents submitting these resources. This article outlines the process that started with the foundation of the DEG through the formation of the PAS as well as the present setup of the system. It is also hoped that this case study will have a positive contribution to the processes being followed by the persons and the groups engaged in similar activities.PresentationPublication Open Access Tek Noktadan Hizmet: Kullanıcı Merkezli Ortaklık(2013-03-20) Holt, İlkay; Gülver, Murat; Library; Information Technology; HOLT, Ilkay; GÜLVER, MuratBirimler arası etkin iletişim sağlanması ve verimli bir karar alma sürecinin sağlanması için tek noktadan hizmet önemlidir.
