From 1430 signal decays, the forward–backward asymmetry of the muons, the K⁎(892)0 longitudinal polarization fraction, and the differential branching fraction are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass squared. The integrated luminosity of the dataset collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponds to View the MathML source. These measurements provide comprehensive information about the Z boson production mechanisms, and are compared to the QCD predictions at leading order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory.ArticlePublication Metadata only Azimuthal decorrelation of jets widely separated in rapidity in pp collisions at s√=7s=7 TeV(Springer International Publishing, 2018) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraThe decorrelation in the azimuthal angle between the most forward and the most backward jets (Mueller-Navelet jets) is measured in data collected in pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at s√=7s=7 TeV. The measurement is presented in the form of distributions of azimuthal-angle differences, Δϕ, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, the average cosines of (π − Δϕ), 2(π − Δϕ), and 3(π − Δϕ), and ratios of these cosines. The jets are required to have transverse momenta, pT, in excess of 35 GeV and rapidities, |y|, of less than 4.7. The results are presented as a function of the rapidity separation, Δy, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, reaching Δy up to 9.4 for the first time. The results are compared to predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators and to analytical predictions based on the DGLAP and BFKL parton evolution schemes.ArticlePublication Metadata only Charged-particle nuclear modification factors in PbPb and pPb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV(Springer International Publishing, 2017) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraThe spectra of charged particles produced within the pseudorapidity window |η| < 1 at sNN−−−−√=5.02sNN=5.02 TeV are measured using 404 μb−1 of PbPb and 27.4 pb−1 of pp data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The spectra are presented over the transverse momentum ranges spanning 0.5 < pT< 400 GeV in pp and 0.7 < pT< 400 GeV in PbPb collisions. The corresponding nuclear modification factor, RAA, is measured in bins of collision centrality. The RAA in the 5% most central collisions shows a maximal suppression by a factor of 7-8 in the pT region of 6-9 GeV. This dip is followed by an increase, which continues up to the highest pT measured, and approaches unity in the vicinity of pT = 200 GeV. The RAA is compared to theoretical predictions and earlier experimental results at lower collision energies. The newly measured pp spectrum is combined with the pPb spectrum previously published by the CMS collaboration to construct the pPb nuclear modification factor, RpA, up to 120 GeV. The trigger system consists of two levels designed to select events of potential physics interest from a GHz (MHz) interaction rate of proton-proton (heavy ion) collisions. The first level of the trigger is implemented in hardware, and selects events containing detector signals consistent with an electron, photon, muon, τ lepton, jet, or missing transverse energy. A programmable menu of up to 128 object-based algorithms is used to select events for subsequent processing. The trigger thresholds are adjusted to the LHC instantaneous luminosity during data taking in order to restrict the output rate to 100 kHz, the upper limit imposed by the CMS readout electronics. The second level, implemented in software, further refines the purity of the output stream, selecting an average rate of 400 Hz for offline event storage. Events consistent with the topology of associated VH production, where the Higgs boson decays to a pair of bottom quarks and the vector boson decays leptonically, are analyzed. The consistency of data with a potential pseudoscalar contribution to the HVV interaction, expressed by the effective pseudoscalar cross section fractions fa3, is assessed by means of profile likelihood scans. Results are given for the VH channels alone and for a combined analysis of the VH and previously published H→VV channels. Under certain assumptions, View the MathML source is excluded at 95% confidence level in the combination. The differential cross sections and their ratios are presented as functions of p T. The measurements are also shown as functions of the jet multiplicity. Differential cross sections are obtained as functions of the ratio of the Z/γ * p T to the sum of all jet transverse momenta and of the ratio of the Z/γ * p T to the leading jet transverse momentum. The measurement covers a phase space up to 2 TeVTeV in jet transverse momentum and 2.5 in absolute jet rapidity. The statistical precision of these data leads to stringent constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton. The data provide important input for the gluon density at high fractions of the proton momentum and for the strong coupling constant at large energy scales. Using predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, complemented with electroweak corrections, the constraining power of these data is investigated and the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass MZMZ is determined to be αS(MZ)=0.1185±0.0019(exp)+0.0060−0.0037(theo)αS(MZ)=0.1185±0.0019(exp)−0.0037+0.0060(theo) , which is in agreement with the world average.ArticlePublication Metadata only Constraints on the pMSSM, AMSB model and on other models from the search for long-lived charged particles in proton–proton collisions at s√=8TeV(Springer, 2015-07-15) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraStringent limits are set on the long-lived lepton-like sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) and the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The limits are derived from the results presented in a recent search for long-lived charged particles in proton–proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. In the pMSSM parameter sub-space considered, 95.9 % of the points predicting charginos with a lifetime of at least 10 ns are excluded. These constraints on the pMSSM are the first obtained at the LHC. Charginos with a lifetime greater than 100 ns and masses up to about 800 GeV in the AMSB model are also excluded. The method described can also be used to set constraints on other models.ArticlePublication Metadata only Constraints on the spin-parity and anomalous HVV couplings of the Higgs boson in proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV(American Physical Society, 2015-07-13) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraThe study of the spin-parity and tensor structure of the interactions of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed using the H→ZZ,Zγ∗,γ∗γ∗→4ℓ, H→WW→ℓνℓν, and H→γγ decay modes. The full data set recorded by the CMS experiment during the LHC run 1 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and up to 19.7 fb−1 at 8 TeV. A wide range of spin-two models is excluded at a 99% confidence level or higher, or at a 99.87% confidence level for the minimal gravitylike couplings, regardless of whether assumptions are made on the production mechanism. Any mixed-parity spin-one state is excluded in the ZZ and WW modes at a greater than 99.999% confidence level. Under the hypothesis that the resonance is a spin-zero boson, the tensor structure of the interactions of the Higgs boson with two vector bosons ZZ, Zγ, γγ, and WW is investigated and limits on eleven anomalous contributions are set. Tighter constraints on anomalous HVV interactions are obtained by combining the HZZ and HWW measurements. All observations are consistent with the expectations for the standard model Higgs boson with the quantum numbers JPC=0++.ArticlePublication Metadata only Correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb and pp collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV(Springer International Publishing, 2016-02) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraThe quark-gluon plasma is studied via medium-induced changes to correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb collisions compared to pp reference data. This analysis uses data sets from PbPb and pp collisions with integrated luminosities of 166 μb−1 and 5.3 pb−1, respectively, collected at sNN−−−√=2.76sNN=2.76 TeV. The angular distributions of charged particles are studied as a function of relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) with respect to reconstructed jet directions. Charged particles are correlated with all jets with transverse momentum (p T) above 120 GeV, and with the leading and subleading jets (the highest and second-highest in p T, respectively) in a selection of back-to-back dijet events. Modifications in PbPb data relative to pp reference data are characterized as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charged particle p T. A centrality-dependent excess of low-p T particles is present for all jets studied, and is most pronounced in the most central events. This excess of low-p T particles follows a Gaussian-like distribution around the jet axis, and extends to large relative angles of Δη ≈ 1 and Δϕ ≈ 1.ArticlePublication Metadata only Decomposing transverse momentum balance contributions for quenched jets in PbPb collisions at √=2.76sNN=2.76 TeV(Springer International Publishing, 2016) Khachatryan, V.; Işıldak, Bora; The CMS Collaboration; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; IŞILDAK, BoraInteractions between jets and the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions are studied via the angular distributions of summed charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) with respect to both the leading and subleading jet axes in high-pT dijet events. The contributions of charged particles in different momentum ranges to the overall event pT balance are decomposed into short-range jet peaks and a long-range azimuthal asymmetry in charged-particle pT. The results for PbPb collisions are compared to those in pp collisions using data collected in 2011 and 2013, at collision energy sNN−−−−√=2.76sNN=2.76 TeV with integrated luminosities of 166 μb−1 and 5.3 pb−1, respectively, by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The distributions are corrected for detector effects, and compared with several event generators based on two- and multi-parton matrix elements at leading order.
