Kendi kaderini tayin hasta için temel bir haktır. Hastanın, rızasının hukuki geçerliliği için zamanında ve yeterince aydınlatılması gerekir. Bir müdahale için verilen rıza, sadece onun açısından etki gösterir, sonraki müdahaleler açısından etki göstermez. Çok acil hallerde rıza almak olanağı yoksa, alışılagelmiş tedavi yöntemi seçilmeli, en riskli olanlar tercih edilmemelidir. Aydınlatma yapıldığını ispat yükümlülüğü, doktorun üzerindedir.

Self determination is a fundamental right for the patient. In order that the patient's consent can be accepted legally valid, the patient should be informed in time and furnished with necessary details. A consent given for one intervention can be effective only for it, it will not be any effect for further interventions. In emergency situations, if there is no possibility to obtain the patient's consent, the common treatment methods should be chosen, the riskier methods should not be preferred.The burden of proof is on the physician that informing liability is fulfilled.
