Digital maturity measurement based on the stages of digital business transformation a study in the automotive sales and aftersales sector
Mutlu, Irmak
Digital transformation is the change of socio-economic structures such as business models, supply chains, platforms, or ecosystems as a consequence of the use of digital technology. Consistent with the previous research on understanding digital transformation, the transformational change of organizations, business models, platforms or ecosystems are triggered by digital technology exposure. Therefore, the impact of digital technologies on the digital transformation of companies and internal organizational aspects plays a critical role in literature as well as industrial practice. This transformational change triggered by the technologies raised the question about the digital maturity measurement or readiness assessment. The digital maturity model proposed in this study brings a new approach to both academics and practitioners in digital transformation literature regarding the digital measurement of the companies. This research mainly aims to answer, “How can the digital maturity level of an organization be measured?”. Research of the digital maturity measurement of organizations structured according to the following four parts: (1) Stages of Digital Business Transformation, (2) Organizational Aspects of Digital Maturity, (3) Digital Maturity Index (DMI) Development, and (4) Digital Maturity Index for Measurement. The chapters of the research are structured based on Churchill’s 8 steps for and Digital Maturity Index (DMI) Development and Implementation eight steps [1]. The findings for the four parts are (1) The stages of digital business transformation, (2) Organizational aspects of digital maturity, (3) Digital Maturity Index (DMI) as an instrument, (4) Digital Maturity Index (DMI) implementation findings. The first part focuses on defining and differentiating among core concepts of digital business transformation, i.e., digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation and stages’ arrangement from digitization to digital transformation. In this part, 5 stages are derived from expert interviews and literature reviews as the progressive stages of digital business transformation. At the end of this part, (i) digital passive, (ii) digitization, (iii) digitalization, (iv) digital transition, and (v) digital transformation have been identified as the digital business transformation stages. The second part focuses on identification of the digital technology types such as IoT Data, (The Internet of Things), Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI), and the Cloud etc., all of which have a high impact on the digital transformation of the companies in automotive sales and aftersales sector as well as the extent digital technologies influence the organization’s internal digital transformation through components and structures so a company’s maturity stage progresses accordingly. Therefore, the scope focuses on what internal organizational aspects should be considered when measuring the digital transformation of the companies. These internal organizational aspects are derived from expert interviews and literature reviews such as Culture, Data and Analytics, People, Structure, and Organization, Processes and Systems, Strategy, and Technology. At the end of this part, these six aspects were identified as the internal organizational aspects. The third part focuses on the digital maturity stages and how to measure the digital maturity stage of an organization. Towards the identification of the stage of digital maturity, a digital maturity measurement tool named Digital Maturity Index (DMI) emerged. This part focuses on the Digital Maturity Index (DMI) design and development process covering the data collection and measure purification. In this part, all the findings of first and second parts are integrated as an input for the development of the DMI. The process steps cover literature review, expert interviews, and test phases. To investigate the main research questions (RQ), literature review, unstructured, and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The Digital Maturity Index (DMI) developed based on these literature and interview input as well as generated sample items. With the feedback and support of the PhD committee, and the business practitioner the measure is purified. The developed tool and its questions and rubrics were tested twice at the company with the participation of both the business departments and the IT departments. In total, two test workshops were organized and the feedback was gathered from the business and IT side as well as the feedback of the PhD committee. After integrating all the comments, the questionnaire became ready for the roll out. At the end of this part, as a digital maturity measurement tool an index was developed. The fourth part focuses on validity and reliability assessment of the developed digital maturity model and its business practice empirical implementation after the development of the Digital Maturity Index (DMI) as an instrument. Statistical findings from the empirically tested model are developed. It was complemented with the qualitative interview. This model both theoretically and empirically confirms the proposed hypothetical model’s validation. The DMI was introduced to the management. Then, as the next step two workshops were organized to collaboratively define the digital maturity stage of the company. The workshop participants were grouped into four categories: Managers, IT Expert, Business Expert and Beneficiaries. The questionnaire was rolled out and data analysis was completed using SPSS as a tool. Furthermore, the results of DMI analysis were presented to the upper management and presented to the participants in a workshop format. Any feedback coming out of these meetings was integrated into the analysis. As the final step to validate the findings, a 2nd round of interviews was conducted with several experts who also contributed to the DMI implementation phase. Finally, the statistical analysis was completed, and the results integrated, and questions not supported qualitatively and quantitively not supported questions eliminated and DMI questions were reduced to 31. Finally, at the end of this part, Digital Maturity Index (DMI) as a measurement instrument developed as a norm. The Digital Maturity Index (DMI) development and implementation process is synchronized with the steps of Churchill’s “Procedure for Developing Better Measures” [1]. In parallel to the Churchill procedure, the Digital Maturity Index (DMI) Development and Implementation steps in this research is grouped under eight steps: (1) Literature review and 1st Round of interview findings, (2) DMI development and individual feedback sessions, (3) Test phase 1, (4) Test phase 2, (5) DMI implementation, (6) DMI results and qualitative and quantitative analysis, (7) 2nd round of interview findings and improvement areas, and (8) Finalize DMI instrument. In parallel to DMI Development and Implementation steps, based on Churchill’s procedure, the measure development process follows eight steps: (1) Specify the domain of the construct, (2) General sample of items, (3) Collect data, (4) Purify measure, (5) Collect data, (6) Assess reliability, (7) Assess validity, (8) Develop norm [1]. This research contributes to the literature by delivering a digital maturity measurement model which merges the academic and practitioner contributions and brings a new insight into organization’s digital maturity measurement literature. The developed model was tested at an automotive company, but it was developed considering cross industry implementation.; Dijital dönüşüm, dijital teknolojinin kullanılması sonucunda iş modelleri, tedarik zincirleri, platformlar veya ekosistemler gibi sosyoekonomik yapıların değişmesidir. Tüm bu Dijital Olgunluk İndeksi (DMI) geliştirme ve uygulama süreci, Churchill'in “Procedure for Development Better Measures” (1979) [1] adımlarıyla senkronize edilmiştir.

Application of large-scale optimization methods in scheduling and routing problems
Elyasi, Milad
In this thesis, we consider three different applications of large-scale optimization methods. We focus on the blood donation tailoring problem under uncertain demand in the first problem. In the second one, we propose a model for hybrid manufacturing consisting of flexible manufacturing systems and typical manufacturing machines. In the last one, we consider a two-echelon vehicle routing problem for last-mile delivery of groceries. In the first part of the thesis, we propose a stochastic scenario-based reformulation of the blood donation management problem that adopts multicomponent apheresis and utilizes donor pool segmentation as here-and-now and wait-and-see donors. The donation pool segmentation enables more flexible donation schedules than the orthodox donation approach because wait-and-see donors may adjust their donation schedules according to the realized values of demand over time. We propose a column generation approach to solve the associated multi-stage stochastic donation tailoring problem for realistically sized instances. The second part considers a flexible/hybrid manufacturing production setting with typically dedicated machinery to satisfy regular demand and a flexible manufacturing system to handle surged demand. We model the uncertainty in demand using a scenario-based approach and allow the business to make here-and-now and wait-and-see decisions exploiting the cost-effectiveness of the standard production and responsiveness of the flexible manufacturing systems. We propose a branch-and-price algorithm as the solution approach. Our computational analysis shows that this hybrid production setting provides highly robust response to the uncertainty in demand, even with high fluctuations. In the third part, we propose a \textit{two-echelon vehicle routing problem} (2E-VRP) under consideration of a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles and different customer types. In our model, unlike the previous studies in the literature, not only do the large vehicles visit the pre-assigned points, called satellites, to refill the smaller vehicles, but they also deliver items to the customers. On the other hand, smaller vehicles are responsible for the customers with small size demands and can get refilled whether at the depots or satellites. We propose a branch-and-price algorithm as the solution approach and obtain promising results in comprehensive numerical studies that prove its versatility.; Bu tezde, büyük ölçekli optimizasyon yöntemlerinin üç farklı uygulamasını ele alıyoruz.

Automated maintenance support for data-tier software
Ersoy, Ersin
Data-tier software includes the data model and business logic of enterprise systems, and it is subject to long-term maintenance. Even though the user interface of these systems can be completely replaced, data-tier software usually evolves for decades. The number of domain experts with extensive knowledge about the overall software diminishes in time and applying extensions or changes becomes increasingly effort-consuming and error-prone for new developers. In this thesis, we introduce techniques and tools to provide automated maintenance support for data-tier software. These techniques and tools aim at reducing effort and the number of errors specifically for three challenging maintenance tasks: i) correct placement of a new object like a stored procedure in data-tier software, ii) evaluating the impact of changing database tables on software modules, and iii) evaluating the impact of table extensions on other tables of the same database. The first task is important because introducing a new object to data-tier software should not hamper its modular structure. This structure is defined by the allocation of objects among a set of schemas. Therefore, we introduce an approach and a tool to automatically predict the correct placement of new objects. We extract dependencies among various types of objects (database types, sequences, tables, procedures, functions, packages, and views) that are already placed in schemas. These dependencies are used for training an artificial neural network model, which is then used for prediction. Our industrial case studies show that our approach can reach an accuracy of 89%, whereas the baseline approach using coupling and cohesion metrics can reach 57.4% accuracy at most. There are already several techniques and tools for supporting the second task of analyzing the impact of changes in the data model on the source code. However, they fall short to analyze dynamically created SQL statements, queries on multiple tables, and other types of statements that allow data manipulation in PL/SQL, which is a commonly used language for developing data-tier software. We introduce techniques and a tool to parse both the data model and the source code (i.e., PL/SQL functions and procedures) taking part in all the schemas of a given database. Then, a dependency model is created based on queries and manipulation of database tables. Unlike prior studies, our tool can analyze queries that are created dynamically and that involve multiple tables as well as PL/SQL-specific features. We use the derived dependency model to estimate effort for two different common refactoring types on real systems. We observe high consistency between the automated estimations and manual estimations. The third task is concerned with the impact of changing tables on other tables of the same database. There are only a few studies that focus on this concern. Moreover, these studies consider the impact of deletion and modification of columns in database tables only. To address this limitation, we introduce an approach and a tool for automatically detecting the impact of data model extensions on the data model itself. We employ Siamese networks to detect similarities among database tables and such, to learn implicit relations among them. Table similarities are used as the basis for identifying potential impact. We develop another tool as the baseline, which employs the cosine similarity metric to measure similarity among database tables. Results obtained with Siamese networks turned out to be better than the baseline, achieving the mean F1 score of 96.1%.; Yazılımların veri katmanları, kurumsal sistemlerin veri modeli ile iş mantığını içermekte olup, bu katmanlar uzun süreli bakıma ihtiyaç duymaktadır.

Server and client-side algorithms for enhancing adaptive streaming
Akçay, Mehmet Necmettin
HTTP adaptive video streaming is a technique widely used on the internet today to stream live and on-demand content. Server and client-side algorithms play an important role in improving user experience in terms of metrics such as latency, rebufferings and rendering quality. After explaining the commonly used metrics, we analyzed four main aspects of video streaming (i) bandwidth prediction accuracy, (ii) utilization of playback speed, (iii) adaptive streaming for content-aware-encoded videos, and (iv) head motion awareness for 360-degree videos. 360-degree video streaming requires much higher bandwidth compared to conventional video streaming. We demonstrate that most of the algorithmic improvements achieved for video streaming can also be applied to Viewport Dependent Streaming (VDS) for 360-degree videos. It is also important that in 360-degree video streaming, we have a Head Mounted Display (HMD) device that is capable of pointing the viewport orientation of the user. We also investigate and improve the rate-adaptation algorithms for 360-degree videos by developing several new algorithms making use of the HMD. The new algorithms proposed in this thesis are Low-on-Latency (LoL), Low-on-Latency+ (LoL+), Bang-on-Bandwidth (BoB), Size-aware Rate Adaptation (SARA), Content-aware Playback Speed Control (CAPSC), Head-motion-aware Viewport Margins (HMAVM).We evaluate the proposed new algorithms using the objective metrics discussed in detail and show significant contributions for these new algorithms including up to 91% decrease in rebuffering duration for on-demand streaming, 61.9% decrease in rebuffering duration and 8.1% decrease in latency compared to L2A for low-latency live streaming, 81.3% bandwidth prediction accuracy for interactive streaming, lastly 20% improvement in viewport quality and 50% reduction in motion-to-high-quality delay for 360-degree video streaming.; HAS (HTTP adaptive streaming) günümüzde internet üzerinde canlı ve isteğe bağlı içerikleri yayınlamak için oldukça yaygın kullanılan bir tekniktir. Bu tezde geliştirdiğimiz yeni algoritmalar şu şekildedir; Low-on-Latency (LoL), Low-on-Latency+ (LoL+), Bang-on-Bandwidth (BoB), Size-Aware Rate Adaptation (SARA), Content-Aware Playback Speed Control (CAPSC), Head-Motion-Aware Viewport Margins (HMAVM). Geliştirilen bu yeni algoritmaları detaylıca açıklanan objektif metrikleri kullanarak değerlendiriyoruz ve bu yeni algoritmaların, isteğe bağlı akış için donma süresinde %91'e varan azalma, düşük gecikmeli canlı yayın için L2A algorıtmasına kıyasla donma süresinde %61.9 azalma ve gecikme süresinde %8.1'e varan azalma, interaktif yayında %81.3 bant genişliği tahmin doğruluğu, son olarak 360-derece video akışında görüntü alanı kalitesinde %20 iyileşme ve hareketten yüksek kaliteye gecikme süresinde %50 azalma dahil olmak üzere kayda değer katkılarını gösteriyoruz.
